While on vacation visiting relatives in Florida in 1991, Reubens was arrested on charges of indecent exposure in an adult-movie theater. A media frenzy ensued, and CBS stopped airing reruns of Pee-wee's Playhouse. All Pee-wee-related merchandise was pulled from Toys "R" Us stores. Despite the negative publicity, Reubens' friends and fans rallied around him. In Los Angeles in 2004, Reubens, a collector of vintage erotic art, was charged with misdemeanor possession of obscene material of teenagers, to which he eventually pleaded guilty.
