Following the success of the movie and the stage shows, CBS offered Reubens a gig producing, directing and acting in his own children's television series. With a sizable budget and minimal interference from the network, Pee-wee's Playhouse went on to win 22 Emmy Awards in just four years. He demurred a sixth season, electing to take a sabbatical instead.
