Following the success of his stage show, Reubens was offered an opportunity from Warner Bros. to write a full-length film script for what later became Pee-wee's Big Adventure. The film, directed by up-and-coming director Tim Burton, went on to become both a cult classic and a financial success, grossing more than $40 million domestically.
