Eddie Perez and Abraham Giles
Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice, Office of the Chief State's Attorney / AP

Hartford, Conn., Mayor Eddie Perez and former Representative Abraham Giles
Accused of: extortion, conspiracy (Perez) and bribery (Giles)
Authorities say that Giles, left, demanded $250,000 from a developer who wanted to build on a parking lot that he rented from the city for $500 a month. The amount was later reduced to $100,000; Perez told the developer that he must pay Giles for the project to proceed. Perez is also facing charges that he intentionally underpaid a local contractor for work on his home. Both men have pleaded not guilty.
