For the many who feel that the compensation provided by Union Carbide in the 1989 settlement was insufficient, justice has moved slowly. All attempts thus far to gain further redress have met with little or no success; a federal class action, Sahu v. Union Carbide et al., seeking damages for personal injury, medical monitoring and relief in the form of a cleanup, is presently pending on appeal before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York. Meanwhile, Warren Anderson, the chairman and CEO of Union Carbide at the time of the disaster, has been summoned to appear in an Indian court to face charges of homicide. He has thus far avoided an international arrest warrant calling for his presence.
