The clash over the fate of Kashgar has become a sore point in the larger struggle for control of the region, which has been inundated by immigrating Han Chinese in the past few years. In the summer of 2009, nearly 200 people were killed when riots erupted in the provincial capital, Urumqi, as Muslim Uighurs attacked members of the Han Chinese community.
