Requests for items from the Port Authority collection must be accompanied by a detailed description of how the piece will be used. Each request is reviewed by the judge responsible for adjudicating the wrongful death lawsuits stemming from the attacks. While the steel is considered potential evidence in those cases, tests on it were completed in 2005 and since that time, the judge has granted all requests.
