The Spy Who Wouldn't Keep a Secret
In 1975 former CIA case officer Philip Agee published Inside the
Company, an explosive best seller that condemned the agency's practices. The book not only provided detailed accounts of how spies operated and were
managed around the world but also revealed the names of covert agents. Agee,
who lived outside the U.S. for the rest of his life and died in Cuba
in 2008, published more names in subsequent books. In 1982, the U.S.
Congress passed a law against revealing the identity of covert agents,
a statute that came into play in the Valerie Plame scandal that
bedeviled the presidency of George W. Bush.
