A Brief History of World War II Movies

Director Terrence Malick came out of a 20-year career hiatus to adapt James Jones' fictionalized memoir of the savage battle for the Pacific island of Guadalcanal. The film's native choral music and elegant photography still entrance, but look beyond the war and you'll see that the central theme, as always with Malick, is the journey from youth to adulthood.
