For as long as the residents of Sogola, Mali, can remember, death from diarrhea has been a routine part of life in the village. Almost every family has lost at least one child to the illness. But since last year, when aid organizations began distributing zinc supplements in the community, not a single child has died. In the photo above, Maimouna Bakayogo dissolves the tablets in water before giving them to her sick son.
