A Last Resort
In 1992, journalist Ted Gup exposed the facility in a 6,000-word piece published by the Washington Post. Immediately afterward, several Congressional leaders, including Bob Dole, issued a joint statement condemning the article for compromising the facility's security and usefulness. But House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt dissented, telling the press: "This is a relic of the Cold War which probably ought to be mothballed."
