Preparing For Disaster
During the late 1950s, when thousands of Americans were building bomb shelters amid heightened fears of a nuclear holocaust, the federal government began building its own super-sized, top-secret bunker for all 535 members of Congress at The Greenbrier. Dubbed "Project Greek Island," the facility took three years to build and coincided with the construction of the hotel's "West Virginia Wing," an above-ground addition to the resort.
