Bettmann / Corbis
From Railways to Riches
In 1913, the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway bought the property, added a new building to "The Old White," and renamed the resort The Greenbrier Hotel. The railroad company's expansion also included a "mineral bath department" (which now houses the indoor pool) and an 18-hole golf course. The following year, President and Mrs. Woodrow Wilson vacationed at the newly reopened, year-round resort, as did Joseph and Rose Kennedy, who were celebrating their honeymoon. In 1922, The Old White was demolished to make way for even more additions.
