In the 1970s, marchers in St. Patrick's Day parades from New York to
Boston (above) politicized the event, holding banners supporting Irish
Catholic freedom from English rule. The peace accords ending
violence between English Protestants and the Irish Catholics weren't
finalized until 1998.
