TIME Goes to the Opera
1933: Lawrence M. Tibbett
"Twenty times last week a strapping, coffee-colored man in a baby-blue wrapper went out in front of the curtain of Manhattan's Metropolitan Opera House to bow right & left in a shattering storm of applause. Ten times there appeared with him a stocky, wavy-haired man in busi- ness clothes who stood and looked bewildered. The coffee-colored man was Baritone Lawrence Tibbett, the bewildered one Composer Louis Gruenberg.... New York had witnessed the premiere of the most exciting U. S. opera yet written."
