Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Transglobe Expedition, 1979-1982
Flying the Flag
Charlie Burton (left) and Fiennes at the North Pole on Easter Day, 1982. Fiennes called his South African colleague "the toughest man I have ever met, both mentally and physically." On their subsequent voyage up the Pacific from Antarctica, a message arrived from President Ronald Reagan: "You are attempting something never yet done. The 'can-do' your expedition so perfectly exemplifies is still alive in the free world. God speed."
