Crucial Crewmates
Dr. Edward A. Wilson (left), Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Apsley Cherry-Gerrard (right) are pictured upon their return from a winter trip to Cape Crozier in August 1911. Due entirely to a conversation on polar exploration between Bowers and Sir Clements Markham, he received a telegram from Scott offering him a place on the Terra Nova without even undertaking an interview. Bowers is frequently praised by Scott in his diary: "Little Bowers remains a marvel — nothing comes amiss to him and no work is too hard."
