Barbie Turns 50

In 1971, Barbie's creators re-imagined their creation to reflect how America had changed since 1959. She acquired a suntan, straight hair and a California lifestyle. Her face was also re-sculpted, with an open smile, pearly white teeth, and, thanks to a nascent feminist movement, eyes that looked forward, instead of coyly to the side.
