The combination of the inevitable post 9/11 slump in air travel and operating costs running into many millions led to the demise of the world's favorite airliner. Post crash modifications — strengthened tires and kevlar lined fuel tanks — further added to the airline's losses and Concorde was finally retired from service in 2003.
