When he was looking for a way to render a body of water as pure abstraction, the American color-field painter Ellsworth Kelly remembered the trapezoidal bay in Cézanne's view of The Gulf of Marseille, which he had seen as a boy at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
