Starting in 1949, Martin and Lewis made sixteen films for Paramount in the course of ten years. A review of the first, My Friend Irma, above, by New York Times film critic Bosley Crowther made note of the "freakishly built" Lewis, whose "swift eccentricity" "harrowing features" and vocal protestations had a "genuine comic quality."
