Director Richard Linklater adapted Philip K. Dick's novel of the same title. A stellar cast (Robert Downey Jr., Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Woody Harrelson) were rotoscoped: this is where the cast are first shot in live-action, before the footage is painted over. The process was so lengthy that the film missed its initial September 2005 release date by an entire year.
