The Horror
This photograph, taken from the photo album belonging to Lilli Tauber, shows mass accommodations for Jews in Poland's Opole ghetto. Tauber comments, "My father had the picture taken by a Jewish photographer in May 1941. Opole was completely closed off. The Jews who lived in it were not allowed to leave it. Instead, a lot more Jews kept coming in.

My father wrote: 'If you saw our henhouse ... eight people sleep at the bottom, seven at the top. But we can feel pretty lucky, as we have enough space. 2,700 people envy us. They sleep on the ground or on wooden planks, in the best case in a deck chair.'"

Tauber was taken to England before the war began. Her experiences have been crafted into a beautiful short film produced by Centropa.
