A television still shows the 11th Panchen Lama, approved by the Chinese government as Tibet's second most important spiritual leader, during his confirmation ceremony in Lhasa in November 1995. The Dalai Lama had recognized another Tibetan boy earlier in the year as the true reincarnation of the Panchen Lama, much to the consternation of the Chinese government who maintains its right to approve any such selection.
