After assisting special effects pioneer (and his boyhood idol) Willis O'Brien, the man who engineered King Kong, Harryhausen was hired to work on an early "creature feature" about an atomic bomb test in the Arctic Circle that unfreezes a hibernating fictional dinosaur, Rhedosaurus, that begins to wreak havoc in New York City.
