Renzo Piano Builds for the 21st Century

Piano's first skyscraper was the 52-story New York Times headquarters in Manhattan. Though Piano aimed for an impression of lightness and transparency, the building's "sunscreen" of ceramic rods, intended to shield the glass window walls, as well as its battleship grey exterior, ended up giving it a heavier feel.
