March 17, 2000: Cult burns itself to death in its church in Uganda

And just before midnight on Mar. 17, 2000, several fires began at the Movements buildings in Uganda. Close to 1,000 may have burned to death, a cult death toll exceeding the Jonestown fatalities. Kibwetere is believed to have perished but stories persist that Mwerinde masterminded the conflagration and then escaped.
