The Euphronios Krater
In 2006, after an aggressive campaign by Italian Cultural Minister Francesco Rutelli, New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art agreed to return to Italy this 2,500-year-old Greek krater — a bowl for mixing wine and water — that was painted by the artist Euphronios. The Met purchased it in 1972 for what was then the enormous sum of $1 million.
