I'd just arrived in Australia from the U.S., and this was my first visit to Manly, on one of the hottest days of summer. I was fascinated by this family who had come all the way from Macquarie Fields [in Sydney's west], dragging everything but the kitchen sink with them. I spent a couple of hours with them, developing a relationship so that they were very relaxed when I took this shot
