J.M.W. Turner The Sunshine Boy
Tate, London
Disaster at Sea (also known as The Wreck of the Amphitrite), c. 1833-1835
oil on canvas
Another unfinished canvas, this one shows the destruction of a ship that went down at sea less than a mile from shore, taking with it 125 female convicts and their children. The captain refused to put them into life boats, fearing he would be held responsible financially if any of the prisoners escaped. Turner used the episode to produce a scene of chaos and horror.
