A 1995 Fortune magazine article famously predicted the "Death of Hong Kong" following the handover, prophesying that PLA soldiers would be a visible, ominous presence on Hong Kong's streets. But July 1, 1997, when thousands of crisply-uniformed troops crossed the border shortly after the handover ceremony, was the last time most Hong Kongers saw PLA soldiers on their soil. Aside from occasional open house days when curious locals are invited to visit their bases, the military's presence has been largely invisible.
