March 25, 2007: Donald Tsang is elected to his first full term as chief executive over his challenger, Alan Leong, in the first contested election for Hong Kong's top leadership position. Although Leong secures enough nominations to appear on the ballot under Hong Kong's Byzantine election laws, the widely popular Tsang is swept to a resounding victory by Hong Kong's 800 electors on the strength of the territory's humming economy. Still, Leung, who represents a coalition of pro-democracy parties, vows to press for universal suffrage before the next chief executive election, called for 2012.
