Mike Nichols' The Birdcage (1996) places Williams at the center of a star-studded cast that included Nathan Lane, left, Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest and Hank Azaria. Based on La Cage aux Folles, a 1973 French play, and a subsequent Broadway musical by the same name, the movie tells the story of a transvestite owner of a Miami drag club owner, played by Williams, and his transvestite partner (Lane), who must pretend to be a straight couple.
