Humble Beginnings
Like most stars who emerged in the 1950s, Redford's acting career began in New York, where he found roles in both television and on stage. Starting in 1959, he began to appear as a guest star on numerous television programs, like Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Route 66, Tate and the The Twilight Zone. In his biggest Broadway success, Barefoot in the Park (1963), Redford played the newlywed husband of Elizabeth Ashley in the Neil Simon production, which in 1967 was made into a film, pairing Redford in the same role, above, opposite Jane Fonda this time as his wife.
