The Result
After two matches against the steep human competition, Watson won with a score of $77,147, beating Jennings at $24,000 and Rutter with a score of $21,600. The prizes were 1 million to first place (Watson), $300,000 for second, and $200,00 for third. All three contestants made donations of their winnings to charity. (100% of Watson's winnings were divided equally to World Vision and World Community Grid.) As far as the future goes, Watson, IBM says "The goal is to have computers start to interact in natural human terms across a range of applications and processes, understanding the questions that humans ask and providing answers that humans can understand and justify." IBM and Nuance Communications Inc. are partnering to develop a commercial product that will work with physicians at Columbia University to use Watson's intelligence to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
