In the 2010 indie, Blue Valentine, Williams plays Cindy, a mercurial, frustrated woman who finds herself out of love with her well-meaning but shiftless husband, played by Ryan Gosling. Written and directed by Derek Cianfrance, the film had been in development for the last seven years. Cianfrance had met Willams just after the conclusion of Dawson's Creek and Michelle, enamored by the script, remained attached to the film as the director struggled to get financing. Her devotion seems to have paid off, as this year she received a Golden Globe nomination for best dramatic actress for her performance.
