The director's second feature length film, Requiem for a Dream, was based on the novel of the same name written by Hubert Selby, Jr. A chronicle of the downward spiral of a drug-addled family, it starred Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly. Aronofsky received acclaim for his stylish direction and was nominated for another Independent Spirit Award, this time for Best Director. The film itself was nominated for five awards in total, winning two, one for Ellen Burstyn's performance as Best actress and the Independent Spirit Award.
