The Nineties
Green Day consists of Armstrong, center, drummer Tré Cool, left, and bassist Mike Dirnt. The trio of young musicians broke into the mainstream with Dookie, the band's third album. When Dookie debuted in 1994, TIME wrote: "Green Day's punk nihilism works because it's delivered with self-deprecating humor, not with narcissistic rock angst."
