In the eighties, Nelson participated in a number of musical and charitable ventures. He would join Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson as part of the highly successful music group The Highwaymen. In 1984 he would sing in the famous "We are the World" single to benefit African famine relief and in 1985 he helped establish Farm Aid, a benefit concert to fundraise for family farmers in the United States.
