In December, 2009, Sawyer took over for Charles Gibson as anchor of ABC World News, three days after Gibson's retirement. With Katie Couric as the anchor of CBS News and Sawyer that of ABC World News, it meant that for the first time in broadcast history, two of the three network news anchor positions were filled by women.
