Raised in Crieff, Scotland, McGregor dropped out of school at 16 to pursue drama training. At age 22 he landed a lead role in Danny Boyle's Trainspotting, the now-classic black comedic tale of drug addicts in Edinburgh. To get prepared for the role, the young actor shed 28 pounds and reportedly even considered trying heroin himself (but then thought better of it). In the photo above, he poses with his co-stars in the film, Ewen Bremner, left, and Robert Carlyle, right.
