It took three attempts to craft a successful album, but when it finally came in 1996, Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet), established Shakira's presence on the Latin American music scene. Under the wing of Gloria Estefan, the young star then broke into the American market, winning her first Grammy and beginning to learn English (using the works of Walt Whitman, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan for guidance).
