Friends in High Places
By the 1980s, Goodall had turned her attention to chimpanzee conservation, lobbying in speeches and on television to protect them and their habitat. In 2002, she was honored by the United Nations (and its then Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, above) as a Messenger of Peace in recognition of her commitment to preserving the environment and one of humankind's closest relatives.
