Van Morrison: A Life in Music

Michael Ochs / Corbis

Born in Belfast, Morrison (second from right, above) joined with a group of friends in 1964 to form the band Them. In little over a year, they were scoring hits on both sides of the Atlantic, with covers like "Baby, Please Don't Go," and Morrison's own compositions, most notably the classic garage-band anthem, "Gloria."
