Carell was nominated in 2006 for an Emmy for Best Actor in a Comedy, but lost to Tony Shalhoub, the star of Monk. Later in the evening, Carell's former cast mates Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert were called upon to present an award to Ricky Gervais, the inspiration for Carell's Office character. Because Gervais was unable to attend the ceremony, the two Daily Show stars announced that they would give the statuette instead to their "good friend" Carell. Much merriment ensued.
