The issues involved in President Clinton’s decision to renew China’s most- favored-nation trading status are not simply political and moral: China has jumped from the 35th largest American trading partner in 1979 to seventh largest last year. Forty percent of the toys sold in the U.S. are made in China, such as Hasbro’s Ernie doll.
