A panel of economists at the private National Bureau of Economic Research has declared that the recession is officially over. What’s more, these experts say, the recession technically ended in March 1991 — 21 months ago. The panel based its finding on the fact that several measures of economic activity, including nonagricultural employment and industrial production, bottomed out around January and March of 1991 and had upward trends afterward. Though the recession may be technically over, don’t break out the champagne — 9.2 million people are still unemployed.
