James Garner is everything Sunset wants to be and isn't. He is incisive, authoritative and a pleasure to watch. He knows the key he wants to play in: ironic patience with his friends, ironic impatience with his enemies. And he knows how to hit all the notes in his chosen range cleanly, with that easy energy that bespeaks the work of an old pro untainted by cynicism or egotism.
