Students of money management are rarely allowed to practice with other people's nest eggs. But Ohio State University has decided to entrust students in Finance 723, Advanced Investment Management, with a chunk of the real thing: $5 million of the school's $245 million endowment.

Starting in the fall, the 100 students will be responsible for assembling a profitable portfolio of stocks, bonds and other investments. Professors Stephen Buser and Anthony Sanders plan to steer them into cautious investments. The goal is to match the percentage gain of the Standard & Poor's 500 index.
