Holograms, those silvery 3-D images that adorn 500 million credit cards, will – soon make an appearance on another product: designer clothing. Garments made by Italy’s Gruppo GFT for European designers Valentino, Emanuel Ungaro and Claude Montana will arrive in stores next spring bearing wafer-thin holograms that are glued to labels inside the clothing. The images, virtually impossible to copy, will certify to shoppers and retailers that the designer pieces are authentic. Anyone who tries to rip out the label and transfer it to a counterfeit designer garment will ruin the hologram. Clothing manufacturers hope the holograms will put a big dent in the more than $700 million in profits that they lose to knock-off artists each year.
